Mackinac Island and the Straits of Mackinac usually peak around October 5 to 13. The island bans cars, so the color comes from a bicycle or on foot along the bluffs, with Lakes Michigan and Huron on either side and the Mackinac Bridge to the west. Early to mid-October is the window, with fewer crowds than the summer season.
More than 80 percent of the island is state park, mostly hardwood forest laced with quiet roads and trails. In fall the maples turn over limestone bluffs and the two lakes meet in cold blue below. Without engines, the experience is unusually still: leaves, water, the occasional carriage. The Mackinac Bridge and the mainland color frame the western view.
There is no driving on the island, which is the point. The mainland approach is its own color route: I-75 over the Mackinac Bridge, with the Tip of the Mitt around Mackinaw City and the eastern U.P. shore on the far side. Take the ferry from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace and trade the car for a bike.
M-185, the only state highway in the country that bans cars, circles the island in about eight miles along the shore, level and easy by bike or foot. Inland, trails climb to Arch Rock and Fort Holmes, the high point, for color over the Straits. Walking the bluff roads past the historic cottages is a quieter alternative.
Sea-kayak outfitters at the Straits run paddles along the island and the Mackinaw shore on calm days, a low-water view of the bluff color. The Straits can be rough, so this depends on the weather.
