When does fall color peak around Saginaw Bay?

The Saginaw Bay country around Bay City and Midland usually peaks around October 14 to 22. This is oak and maple on the low ground at the bay's edge, turning a week or so after northern Michigan, and it lines up with the fall waterfowl push through the marshes. Mid to late October is the window here.

What you'll see

The land around Saginaw Bay is flat and water-laced, so the color comes in broad stands of oak, maple, and cottonwood over marsh and river rather than in hillside sweeps. The bay flats turn a little later and hold longer than the hills to the north, and the same weeks bring tens of thousands of ducks and geese staging in the coastal wetlands. It is color tied to the rhythm of the flyway.

The drive

The river road through the Chippewa Nature Center in Midland runs along the Tittabawassee through bottomland hardwood. North of Bay City, the shore roads toward the Tobico and the state recreation area give marsh and bay views. The country roads around the Cass and Shiawassee bottoms link a string of river color.

On foot

The Tobico Marsh boardwalk at Bay City State Park crosses one of the largest remaining freshwater coastal marshes on the Great Lakes, with observation towers over the cattails and color at the wood's edge. The trails at the Chippewa Nature Center in Midland follow the river through hardwood.

On the water

The Tittabawassee through Midland is an easy paddle through bottomland color, and the lower Saginaw and its tributaries open into the marsh country. Fall is a fine time to be on this slow water as the waterfowl move through.

How to time your visit

Plan for the middle two weeks of October, a week or so behind Grayling and the Au Sable. The bay moderates the cold, so color here lags the north and holds a bit longer. The waterfowl migration peaks in the same window, which makes the marshes worth an early morning.
