Michigan fall color · field guide

When does fall color peak in Saugatuck and southwest Michigan?

Saugatuck and the southwest Michigan lakeshore usually peak around October 18 to 26. Lake Michigan keeps the shore warm into fall, so color here runs a little later than inland, set against dune and big water. The back half of October is the window, holding toward the start of November in the most sheltered spots.

What you'll see

This is dune-and-shore color: hardwood turning gold and red along wooded dunes that drop to Lake Michigan, with the lake holding a deep late-season blue. The lakeshore microclimate stretches the season, so when the north is bare the Saugatuck dunes can still be lit. Vineyards and orchards inland add their own turning rows.

The drive

The Blue Star Highway runs the dune country between Saugatuck, Douglas, and South Haven, a slower parallel to the interstate through woods and lakeshore towns. Inland, the roads around the Kalamazoo and the fruit belt link orchard and river color. The Saugatuck Dunes State Park access roads reach trailheads above the lake.

On foot

P.J. Hoffmaster State Park north of Holland has dune trails climbing through hardwood to overlooks above Lake Michigan, with the Gillette dune center at the trailhead. Saugatuck Dunes State Park offers quieter wooded-dune walking to remote beach.

On the water

The lower Kalamazoo River winds through southwest Michigan toward Saugatuck and the lake, an easy paddle through bottomland color. The sheltered bayous near the river mouth stay calm when the big lake is up.

How to time your visit

Aim for the last full week of October into early November. The Lake Michigan shore is one of the later-peaking parts of the state, so this is a good fallback when northern color has dropped. Warm lake water can push the most sheltered color into the first days of November.
